How Rabbit Hole and Radio Tulum are redefining the cultural dining experience in Tulum

It was my first week in Tulum when I found myself strolling into Radio Tulum, not really knowing what to expect. I had been invited to a Conscious Community meetup — one of the many eclectic events they host regularly. As soon as I stepped through those picturesque windows, I knew this wasn’t just any typical venue. The space, packed with creative energy, radiates a vibe that's part artistic hub, part open-air music lounge. I’d later come to learn that Radio Tulum is a nonprofit community radio station and cultural hotspot that houses not only Rabbit Hole Café but a boutique hotel, a co-working space, a full bar, and a live entertainment area.

Stephanie, a marketing guru in the local scene, leads these weekly events, and it was through one of these meetups that I connected with Mandeep Bhatia. He’s a central figure at Radio Tulum, though he doesn’t like the title of “radio host.” He prefers to blend in, calling himself a participant and community member, which is exactly the vibe you get from this place — no egos, just passionate people coming together.

That same casual, unpretentious attitude flows right into Rabbit Hole, the café at the heart of Radio Tulum, where local artwork hangs on the walls, vinyl record coasters sit on the tables, and a community bookshelf invites you to linger. While they’re currently working on designing a full menu, what they’ve got going so far is promising. Case in point: the Focaccia Avocado Toast. Let’s just say it set the bar pretty high.

Picture this: a crispy, seasoned outer crust encasing soft, fluffy sourdough. The fresh avocado, topped with earthy sprouts and that perfect hit of heat from macha salsa, pairs beautifully with two poached eggs, their yolks spilling like liquid gold, bringing everything together in one creamy, buttery bite. It’s a breakfast that steps away from the usual Mexican fare like chilaquiles, offering something refreshingly different, yet equally satisfying. I gave it an 8.9 — and not just for the food.

Here’s the thing about Radio Tulum and Rabbit Hole: it’s not just the food that leaves a lasting impression. It’s the ambiance. There’s something about sitting in this open, art-filled space, talking with Mandeep about music and documentaries, or attending workshops and events that makes every bite taste better. Over the course of a week, I found myself returning three more times. First, to listen to a local entrepreneur speak about the power of mindset in travel and life, then to catch Mandeep and a new friend of mine discuss their plans for a dinner and dance series. And just this morning, I was back for a painting workshop led by artist Jessica Shilling.

Radio Tulum has quickly become a home away from home — a place where you don’t just come for a meal, but to engage, to connect, and to be part of something bigger. The Rabbit Hole is more than just a café; it’s the pulse of a community that values art, music, and the blending of cultures.

So, if you ever find yourself in Tulum, skip the tourist traps and head over to Radio Tulum. Grab a bite at Rabbit Hole and don’t forget to say hi to Mandeep. Trust me, you’ll leave with more than just a full stomach — you’ll leave with stories, connections, and a new spot to call your own.
